The objective of Five day Training on Safety and Health Issues in Industrial Environment conducted in April was to create awareness on the Safety and Health aspects in Industrial Environment. The training program was jointly organized with the Department of Factories, Boilers, Health and Industrial Safety, Govt. of Karnataka and The Dept. of Chemical Engineering, BMSCE, Bangalore. The workshop was well attended with participants from the industry and academia. There were interactive sessions with industrial safety experts, safety consultants and experts from educational institutions.
The main highlight of the program was the Mock Fire Safety Drill by Fire and Emergency Services Department, Govt. of Karnataka which gave the participants practical information about the different types of fires extinguishers available, novel mechanizations used to douse fire and their usage in emergencies.
The training program concluded with an Industrial visit to M/s Bosch, BanP, Audugodi, Bangalore where a demonstration of the Safety & Health Strategy and Practices were made. All the participants attended the industrial trip which was highly informative towards the safety issues practiced in industry.
To orient the students towards Research and Paper Presentation and to develop their Logical and Reasoning Aptitude, the department conducted its Annual Student National Techno-Cultural Symposium Confluence on the 23rdMarch, 2013. Dr.Saravanan.V from Shell Technologies delivered the keynote address on Future Energy Challenges.
Our department releases an Annual Technical Newsletter Chemical Potential during Confluence. The specialty of this newsletter is that it is entirely an initiative of our students right through Soliciting Sponsorships, Editing, Authoring Articles and Designing the issue. This is a clear showcase of the multi-tasking and multi-faceted abilities of our enterprising students. This year too the Chemical Potential was released by Dr. G N Sekhar, The Vice Principal, BMSCE on the day of Confluence 2013. The theme of the newsletter in 2013 was the potential of Nuclear Power as an Alternative Fuel in power generation.
In keeping with the requirements of the Chemical and Allied Industries, the department remodeled its Scheme of Instruction with Interdisciplinary Courses like Nanotechnology, Interfacial Phenomeno,Polymer Processing, Petroleum Refining, Operation Research, Applied Mathematics in Chemical Engg and C++ Programming. Department also takes pride in offering Institutional Electives with emphasis on the Environment and Sustainability like Waste Water Treatment, Pilot Plant and Scale-Up, Composite Materials and Advanced Bio-Process Engg.
The department has a good number of Faculty with Doctoral Qualification and research is being conducted in the areas of Interfacial Science, Biochemical Engg, Separation Science,Food Technologyand Tissue Engg. Faculty are actively involved in National and International Paper Publications, Paper Presentations, Workshops and Conferences.
Taking cue from the requirements of the industry to acquire hands on experience, all our students also pursue internships in Chemical and Allied Industries like Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Baba Atomic Research Center ( BARC), National Aeronautics Ltd. ( NAL ), Indian Institute of Science ( IISC ) and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. ( HAL).
